I wanted to share this...
Sense FsP I have been trying to make FS to be as realistic as possible. This is mostly because with all of the flying I have been doing for
FsP I don't want to feel that I'm just sitting infront of the pc. I want to get the enjoyment I get with real world flying.
With the release of Ground Environment I have finally found a ground texture that I can be happy with. But I wasn't getting the views that
they were getting in the Ground Environment screen shots. In the discription they use Ultimate Terrain and a third party terrain mesh.
I have come to the conclution that what you see on the ground is a three part process.
1- The elevation data, aka terrain mesh, I think this has to be at least 78m terrain mesh. FS Global does this for the whole world. But for
the USA, RealScene 2004 DVD has 4x the resolution at 30m terrain mesh. Also remember that you need the FS 9.1 update and change
your fs9.cfg file to get the 30 meter mesh to show. Change “ TERRAIN_MAX_VERTEX_LEVEL=21 “. 21 makes FS 9 interpolate the mesh
down to 17m which takes away some of the fine jaggedness out of the 30m mesh. 20 shows the 30m mesh in the “raw” form. I
personally like to set this at 21. Terrain mesh is as important in the plains as it is in the mountains.
2- Land class data. I never realized the power and effect of having good land class data. I thought it was mosttly getting the cites right. Oh
how wrong I was! This is the WOW! that Ultimate Terrian brings. I live in Minnesota and we have a lot of lakes and shoreline. These aren't
depicted very well in normal FS. With Ultimate Terrain I find the island on lake Waconia (It is a reporting point on the western edge of the
Minneapolis Terminal Area Chart) and Borden Lake isn't even shown in normal FS. But is perfect in Ultimate Terrain.
3- Terrain Scenery. This is what you see. I thought this would have the greatest effect on what you see. But now I think this has the least
effect. But Ground Environment is the best wide area scenery to date.
So to make your flights more enjoyable and do some sight seeing by bringing your scenery up to date with FS Global or Realscene 2004
DVD, Ultimate Terrain, and Ground Environment.
On a side note I got a TrackIR 4 which is absolutely great with ease of sight seeing and bringing a whole another level to the "being
there" feeling. A must buy!
Happy flying!
