Just a thought...I was penalized tonight for doing a "power back" from a gate in a DC-9. For those that don't know what that is, it's using
reverse thrust to push back.
This procedure is often used and authorized in the Douglas "T-Tail" fleet. I was wondering if it would be possible to code the payload
models with a little "check box" that will allow/disallow power backs with that particular type of aircraft. In essence, it would disable
the "reverse thrust penalty" for just that specific aircraft as coded in the payload model.
I've never seen it done with a CRJ or similar, however, NWA used to do that with their DC-9 aircraft to save on ground costs (although, the
procedure was now changed as they found out the labor costs to operate a push-back tug were less than the fuel used in the power
back). I suspect other carriers still using T-Tail Douglas' may have done it in the past or continue to use the procedure.
