In the AIM I am talking figure 2-3-4.

That sounds more like it. He must have been refering to that area. I still don't understand the emergency thing. I can see wanting to stay
out of ANY aircraft's approach heading, not just in case of an emergency.

This is my technique not a procedure.

Maybe it should be! Sounds like it's the safer way to go. I know I wouldn't want to see an aircraft sitting right at the threshold as I
approached.
