rennman,
Sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. Been kinda busy. What you call the "hop", I can translate into two events. The first is most
likely what you're talking about.
1. When we land with too high a rate of descent, at a faster than usual speed, we'll hit the runway and get "shot" back up into the air (no
more than usually 10 feet). This event is very uncomfortable, however is a common occurence.
2. When we land at a very low rate of descent (I'm talking about those -20ft/min landings) with a high speed, we might "skid" along the
touchdown zone of the runway. This is a very shallow bounce, and doesn't feel very uncomfortable. This doesn't happen very often, as
usually our rate of descent is not that low.
Both of these can be what you're talking about. Normally, you'll see large airliners with the first type of bounce in the landing. It's easy to
tell... all you've got to do, is watch how quickly the main gear is approaching the runway. If it looks fast as hell (10 feet or more per
second), then you'll probably get an initial hard touchdown, a jump in the air, and another very hard touchdown. If they're coming in very
slow, and at the last second appear to almost climb, then you're witnessing the second type of bounce.
Let me know if you have any more questions. No need to "relish" the opprotunity to talk with me, I'm usually here multiple times a day as
I'm also on the FSP Team, and a moderator of this forum. Let me know if you need anything else explained/answered.
