What determines speed

Hey Everyone.

What are the factors that determine if I can go above 250 Kts or if I have to stay below.

I don't know why the co-pilot said that the call was rejected , its not storming or anything!

I am at 15,000 feet and im looking at a 3 hr 30 minute flight :/

Under 10,000 ft, you stay at or below 250. Above 10,000 you can go as fast as the aircraft can handle within range of it's overspeed limit.

I kinda knew that, but I thought you had to call in and request clearance before.

I am at 15,000 Ft and the co-pilot said that the request to go above 250 was rejected.

Can I still go over 250?

Yes, as long as you stay under the aircraft's maximum speed.

you don't need to ask if you are going over 10,000 feet, well exception for Class B VOR corridors and what not but not sure FSP
recognizes that even.

No, the only time you have to call is if you want to go faster than 250 UNDER 10,000 ft.

Just out of curiosity, what governs the rule of 250 under 10,000 ft? Is it a law or a physics thing?

Laws. It's a noise abatement and safety thing; it's more difficult to maneuver to avoid traffic when you're travelling too fast, particularly GA
traffic (which mostly travels below 10,000 ft).

It also helps ATC to line up traffic with sometimes extremely different cruise speeds for approaches

The airspeed limitation below 10000 feet is an ATC restriction. It is designed to enable safe flow of dense departing and arriving traffic. It
is not universal and many exceptions exist, but it is common and used by FS ATC throughout. . You know about it by referring to local
procedures and charts. There is no need to request FSP clearance for this above 10000, since the restriction doesn't exist.
In more detail about real aviation, airport arrival procedures and charts utilize points named SLP's (mandatory slow down point to
250KIAS), some reached above 10000 feet. Additional airspeed restrictions exist for departure and arrival, depending on local
procedures.
