Remember jokes about supposedly blind pilot?

TEL AVIV - Passenger jet of a Serbian company JAT had almost landed on a highway that connects Jerusalem and Tel Aviv because
pilot mistakenly took it for a runway of the nearby international airport Ben Gurion, it was announced yesterday by Israely daily Yediot
Ahronot.

Boeing 737-400 that was flying from Belgrade was only a couple hundred meters above the highway when the traffic controller
realised pilot's intention is to land there instead on the runway.

"Abort the landing and turn the airplane. You are on the wrong landing course" said the controller to the pilot who immediately obeyed.

"An additionaly alarming fact was that it all happened at 5.30AM when the highway is crowded with vehicles because of the morning rushhour." - the daily quotes the oppinion of the airport's manager.

I remember Captain Alan Dix (?) from the video that came with the PSS A320 boxed version who said "you could also do the approach
manually/visually...why anybody would want to do that, I don't know" when flying into birmingham, uk lol (thank god for the auto land feature)

I think everyone is being too hard on the pilot. Who could tell the diffrent between them?

The same happened in Athens about 2 years ago when a russian pilot planned a landing on a highway thinking the lights were the
runway. The controler did not give him the final clearance of course as "he could not see him" (the conversation is recorded). How could
he anyway? However a friend of mine was driving that time on the same highway and according to his description it was a hell of an
experience watching a huge Illusin descending...

now imagine if you were in the airplane and being a flight sim buff you had some idea of what was going on in the cockpit during a landing; and then
you look outside and see state higway number "whatever" under you
