TEL AVIV - Passenger jet of a Serbian company JAT had almost landed on a highway that connects Jerusalem and Tel Aviv because
pilot mistakenly took it for a runway of the nearby international airport Ben Gurion, it was announced yesterday by Israely daily Yediot
Ahronot.
Boeing 737-400 that was flying from Belgrade was only a couple hundred meters above the highway when the traffic controller
realised pilot's intention is to land there instead on the runway.
"Abort the landing and turn the airplane. You are on the wrong landing course" said the controller to the pilot who immediately obeyed.
"An additionaly alarming fact was that it all happened at 5.30AM when the highway is crowded with vehicles because of the morning rushhour." - the daily quotes the oppinion of the airport's manager.
