Have you heard about 'Green Landings'?

Hi all,

a swedish evening paper yesterday ran the story about 'Green Landings', they claimed today the airline SAS allready does it and also that
all airlines in EU will start doing it in 1 years time (when the official start for it is planned/orderred by politicians). The deal is that the
airplane at cruise flight level (300 perhaps) goes directly down to the touchdown on the runway with minimum engine thrust during
descent. The paper claimed that the staged routine to go to different flight levels and manouvre like it was done before is something that
equals 250000 cars pollution over a year, and that this green landing almost nullifies pollution and noise of aiplanes during landing!

MS will have to give us a patch for this (green landings ATC on or off)!

I do that in FSPassengers when I'm out in the bush. I don't really give a damn about not waking the neighbors but it saves me gas money
and that's all I really care about in the end. :P

Cool...that will work in countries like Sweden but try the same in the UK or Germany...how on earth they want to do direct descents to
Heathrow or Frankfurt without staggering, holdings etc ? The plan sounds sweet in theory but I suspect someone forgot that there is
generally more than ONE plane in the airspace - or how about delays due to unpredictable things (go arounds - weather......).
What will they do if a plane executed a go around - will they make it disappear or hold it until all direct descents have landed (better plan
for some hefty extra fuel) or will they 'freeze' all other aircraft approaching so that it can land (kind of pause/unpause would be handy then)!
Why do politicians always interfere with things they do absolutely know NOTHING about ??

I wonder how much the pollution could be reduced if ALL the politicians of this world would move their behinds out of their luxury cars that
guzzle 25l/100KM and reduce their escorts to about 3 cars instead of 10 !!!!

I agree. The other day at my lady's house we were visited by some people promoting their "Earth Awareness" club or something, dumped
a wad of pamphlets on us and asked for money. I shut the door on them but watched them drive away in their Lexus SUV. Earth

stupid tree-hugging hippies. Usually they say they love the earth but usually they are the ones driving an SUV or flying about in their own private
gulfstream or learjet.

Frankly this is why I'm a conservative, a liberals approach is to regulate everything, a conservative approach is to keep out as much as possible, and
this goes to show why the conservative approach always works. I'm sorry but like what was said earlier, sounds good on paper but in practical purposes
it falls flat on its face

What irks me about the whole "green" movement is that they inflate figures, distort facts and twist the truth.

I remember one person had written an article on airliners.net how contrails were destroying the earth because it kept heat in the atmosphere much like
clouds. WHAT A LOAD OF ^@(%, sure, a cloud the width of an SUV is keep a whole lot of heat in. When you come across a tree hugging hippie, just walk
away. They are always full of something, and 9/10 times its #%^

They are doing something similar @ DFW using STARS (Standard Terminal Automation Replacement System).

STARS will sequence traffic into the terminal area. The goal is to drop planes from cruise to the IAP without leveling them off on the descent. Thus
idle descents all the way.

We typically got going into DFW descents pretty close to the IAP from cruise so keeping the aircraft @ idle all the way down was easy. I liked it
cause we burned little gas, I never thought of the tree hugger effects as well.

It's fine if the situation permits to give the controllers a bit of leeway (as if they don't have it already :p) but don't make it a general thing. It is
not going to work all the times or how do you mix a Beech 1900 with a A320 with a B747 with a ......at some point you will have to sort them
out, file them in (if they come from different CA's) and to order the holy mess into something usable. If not it's going to be a 'hail mary' affair
when flying If you compare the descent profiles of a B757 with that of a B747 , combine it with direct GPS routes, limited airport capacity
AND a schedule..........

The STARS system is preprogrammed with the basic descent profiles (airlines fly pretty similar profiles) and it countinues to update the sequence to
provide proper spacing for all aircraft. It will easily group a 747 and B1900 together.

So it is a good program for most operations, in fact when the system was known as FAST it allowed for more arrivals due to proper spacing. Makes for a
nice simple arrival (especially with uplink to the FMS) and in fact stops most slamdunks. KDEN is really bad on slamdunks.

The controller has final authority on the instrutions to the A/C, and the PIC has final authority on those.

If it burns less gas, you can forget about this coming into effect in the US while Bush is still in the White House. Mind you, now that he's
lost control of the Senate , it might.
