I just can't imagine how they were able to fly over the Pacific Ocean during WWII and find the island (or the carrier!) they were suppose to
land on...

Very simple. While too far, they were taking approximate course by magnetic compass.
Getting closer, when their radio receivers started to receive radio beecon (NDB) from the destination airbase or carrier they just did direct on
that navaid. That's it.
Is it hard to imagine???

Japanies were using broadcasting radio in Honolulu as a beacon while making their way to attak PearlHarbour.

Besides, there are some now forgotten methods to figure out your position in the middle of the ocean. By compass and sun or stars.
Sailors used them for centuries.
