A new beginning... - detpilot - 15-05-2010

Hi guys... I've got an announcement to make. It's been a very good week for me, and here's why:

On May 24th, I'll be starting class at Air Cargo Carriers, flying the shorts 360. As if that weren't enough;

I was notified yesterday that I've been selected to fly the KC-135 in the Michigan Air National Guard.

I'm so overwhelmed, it hasn't even sunk in yet... but I wanted to let you all know. Wish me luck!

Good for you Top
Best of luck then Beer

Re: A new beginning... - gbapache - 17-05-2010

I send you my deepest sorrow for being forced to fly a military ridged wing flying contraption. I won't even speak of the Air Force and their
fixed wing fixation. Have fun. Beer please Beer

Re: A new beginning... - mikeshr2 - 18-05-2010

Somebody has to fly these planes. I guess somebody up there thinks you are good enough. Just try to plan out your career path to avoid
flying the same piece of equipment the same route day after day, year after year. Doing that fairly quickly becomes just another routine
boring grind.

Looks like you won't have time to fly that Cirrus anymore so if you could drop it off at KPTK (better yet, KARB) for me i'll make sure to take good care of it
while you are busy Smile

But congrats! Beer

As for the AF, having been an Army pilot flying for the USAF and having seen both sides of the fence I can attest that given the choice I would much
rather put on the blue suit or in that case an actual flight suit as opposed to the Infantry based two piece garbage that the Army provides; and be a
part of the fixed wing "fixation" then to fly for a service that treats its pilots like garbage the way the Army does. If you want to fly go AF, Navy
or even Marines, but the Army is not the place to be a professional pilot. The Army is too wrapped around the axle with self importance BCT mentality
and unless you are crawling through the mud yelling "hooah" your career will be relegated to years of staff duty with a few breaks of actually being
in a cockpit.

The KC-135 will take you to many more places then an Army Helo pilot will ever see flying between a bunch of tents in the desert and some support
base. You will get to visit and meet many interesting people while Army pilots get dressed down by Sergeants Major for daring to wear their wings in
the field. Enjoy, you have made a great decision.

Re: A new beginning... - gbapache - 21-05-2010

Everything you said was exactly right.. my Company was based at Howard AFB 45 days before the invasion of Panama so I have seen
how the better half lives. The best thing I saw was the 24 hour mess hall. and, yes, the 2 peice flight suit was stupid. Sleeping in a one
man dome tent for the first two months in the desert wasn't fun but it does make you learn to tough it out and to appreciate the little things
in life (I never tell anyone that my beverage isn't cold enough). btw...since you'll be working at a flying gas station does that mean you get
a discount on beer and if so could you pick me up a case?BeerFriend

Re: A new beginning... - Joeflyer - 22-05-2010

A BIG congrats to you, Brandon! Seems to me that if you choose the military route, that may be far better than flying a box filled with boxes
(S-360) around the country Wink
