Uh oh...help - SaVas - 02-03-2006

OK so the other day the company I work for was upgrading the ram on our PCs from 256 to 512mb, and our IT guy gave me a couple of
the 256 DDR chips. I figured I could add a smidgeon more RAM to my PC.

Anyway, I opened the case, and it was dusty, so I blew it out with compressed air; blew the fans, including the one on my graphics card,
then added the RAM, PC recognized it, which is fine.

Turned on the sim, was flying for about 15 minutes and then my PC screen looked like abstarct art (similar to when my old ATI 9800 Pro
bit the dust). Turned off the PC and turned it back on. Everything looked fine, then after about 15 minutes again the same thing happened.

Turned it off again, then back on, and went into the nVidia control panel and turned on the temp settings warning. Before my card would
rarely go over 115 degrees C. After 5 to 6 minutes I alt tabbed and it was over 136 degrees C.

I wonder if I damaged the fan on the card when I blew it off with the compressed air. Any pointers you all can give on what I can do to
check?

136º !!! Lord, I rarely (never, most possibly) got to that point!!!! Card issue I´d say, , is your GPU´s "ventilator" (sorry for the word, I am Spanish...)properly placed?High temperatures freezed my rig in the past too til I got a Zalman cooler...

Quite possible.
To check, turn your computer on, with case opened.
Then look inside and make sure that fan on the video card rotates.
If it does - than you have some oher proble.
If it doesn't, than you have to check it further:
Turn of the power.
Remove video card.
Check power cable that is connected to the fan.
Try to rotate fan with your finger to make sure that there's no obstacle inside.
Connect all back, turn on and check again.
If it is still dead, go to the store and buy yourself a nev video card, or use waranty if it is valid.

And, if your case has some extra blowout fans, check them too.

Good luck! Smile

Thanks for the ideas fellas

I will look into it this weekend

Re: Uh oh...help - Sovek - 02-03-2006

def sounds like a fan issue, Now a replacement fan would be the Artic Silencer.

Re: Uh oh...help - Dutch64 - 02-03-2006

I don't know which videocard you have, i have the 6600gt and it usually is on 55-60 C after some hours of simming.... When
blowing out the dust
something might have get stuck in the fan.... It's all i can think of also

Re: Uh oh...help - SaVas - 02-03-2006

Its a 6800 GT 256MB. its always run 110 to 117 degrees when simming

Re: Uh oh...help - omarza - 02-03-2006

Check suggestions as above and also make sure that all cables are still properly in place. Most video cards and CPU's have a small power cable for
the fan... check that its properly in place as the compressed air could have caused it to not make proper contact.

You blew the dust off? Gee! That's a total disrespect to our ancestors.
Dust is not dirt - it's our forefathers!! Treat it with respect!

lol

My only fear is if I need a new graphics card...I have to fork out over a grand for personal property tax on my new car this month, so that
means no simming for me if the card is bad *grumbles*

Re: Uh oh...help - SaVas - 03-03-2006

OK case is open now, and I checked with the sim on. All 4 fans are spinning and the fan on the card is spinning.

So fingers crossed

Re: Uh oh...help - SaVas - 03-03-2006

Well, it doesnt seem to help that all fans including the card fan are working.

I alt tabbed over and although the sim was running fine, my core temp was showing 127 degrees C

Im stumped

Re: Uh oh...help - Dutch64 - 03-03-2006

Are you overclocking your card? Check your bios since you added new memory maybe some settings need to be adjusted like the timing for your memory?

Re: Uh oh...help - SaVas - 03-03-2006

Nope not overclocking it unless it happened when I added the memory.

Does adding more memory mean my card works harder because my PC has more space to save rendered textures? Im still stumped,
and I dont mess with bios. ive heard nastiness about it
