We could all spend a considerable amount of time teaching a person how to interpret IFR enroute charts and approach plates. How
much do you understand about SIDS/STARS or any type of aeronautical chart? That will give us a good idea on where to begin. If you are
just starting out, maybe you could get involved in a ground school that can explain in detail what you need to know. You can also try
finding tutorials online.

Try here http://www.naco.faa.gov/index.asp?xml=naco/online/aero_guide
There you'll find some PDF guides in understanding charts. That should help a bit, and after reading those and you still have questions, ask Smile

And if you fly in the US, you can go to Airnav.com, pick an airport (or go direct: http://www.airnav.com/airports/XXXX, where XXXX is the
ICAO for the airport you want).

Then, scroll down past the runway data and there will be SIDS and STARS for the runways. Click on them to bring up a .pdf for each one.

Well, if Scotty knows nothing about SIDS and STARS or any type of aeronautical chart, he's spitting in the wind until he can get someone
to show him how to read the things.

Re: SIDS and STARS and AIRPORT CHARTS ???? - Ceemosp - 29-10-2006

Hmmmm...do you understand the following :

Missed APCH: Climb on track 277º until crossing D3.5 EFD or 2500', whichever is later, then turn RIGHT onto 070º to intercept R-300
inbound VOR. Cross D10.0 ERF at 4000' or above, then climb to 5000' to VOR.

That's from the EDDE approach charts for ILS Rwy 28

The example charts are from Aisrservices Australia's AIP, available free online. Hope that helps.
P.S. You should understand how to track a VOR, NDB and land using ILS (at the least LLZ) before you worry about STAR's. SID's are straightforward though.

Same if with SID's imho, if you don't know the difference between outbound and inbound they are of no use to you. I am still looking for
some comprehensible information Wink

This is such an "iffy" situation...especially for those who are just starting out in the learning process of flying....even with the sim. Starting
out with the basics of VFR flight is hard enough for some, but trying to understand IFR procedures, interpreting IFR charts and approach
plates are like drinking water through a fire hose to those who have no concept of advanced flying techniques and procedures. My advice
is to keep it as simple as possible at first and build your experience from there. No need to hurry about it.

I can offer help to those in need of aeronautical knowledge, but I'm expensivelol
